Frankfurt is located at the heart of the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main metropolitan region, which has 3.8 million inhabitants and just under two million employees, an important European financial and service centre and a key traffic hub.

On 31 December 2010, there were some 688,000 people living in Frankfurt. That is 8,600 more than in 2009 and only some 3,000 fewer than in record year 1963.
